Kristi Yamaguchi Makes a Strong Dancing with the Stars Debut

Kristi Yamaguchi received the highest scores of the night on last night's Dancing with the Stars season six debut of the women. This was in stark contrast to tennis great Monica Seles who came in last place according to the judges scores. Most inspiring performance went to profoundly deaf actress Marlee Matlin who do incredibly well. She conceded in her taped video package that she can not hear the music or the beat. Her dancing must therefore be largely based on counting and timing (which I guess dancing is anyway). She said she relies on visual cues by watching her professional partner Fabian Sanchez.

But back to our beloved Kristi. Together with Mark Balas, the pair performed a fox trot and received a 9 from each of Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli for a total score of 27. Bruno revealed that Kristy Yamaguchi gave the best first round performance he had seen to date. Quite a compliment indeed. Her husband Bret Hedican and two daughters must have been very proud.

The show returns next Monday with more performances before the double elimination scheduled for Tuesday. We'll be back with more pictures and video. I am confident Kristi Yamaguchi will be safe for many weeks to come.

Kristi Yamaguchi Takes a Break from Dancing with the Stars

Kristi Yamaguchi took time off from rehearsing with her professional dance partner Mark Ballas, to serve as Honorary Chair for A Toast to the Triangle in Raleigh, NC. It is the second year in this role for the Olympic gold medalist. The dinner held on March 9th benefits the Tammy Lynn Center for Development Disabilities. Also joining Kristi at the event which happened to fall during the weeks leading up to the season six premier of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, was her husband Bret Hedican of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Tammy Lynn Center offers education and support services to those with special needs. A Toast to the Triangle was first held in 1986 and is now held annually to raise funds for the TLCDD.

While it has been reported that Kristi has been undertaking long practice sessions with Mark Ballas in preparation for her Dancing with the Stars debut on March 17, it is great that the demands of the show did not prohibit her from participating in such a worthwhile event that she obviously cares deeply about. Kristi Yamaguchi is a true champion.

Kristi Yamaguchi is an Early Favorite to Win Dancing with the Stars

Kristy Yamaguchi is an Early Favorite to Win Dancing with the Stars Season 6

The betting odds have been released and with 2-1 odds, Olympic gold-medalist Kristi Yamaguchi is an early favorite to be the next Dancing with the Stars champion. She would join the ranks of former Stars champs: Kelly Monaco, Drew Lachay, Emmitt Smith, Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves. If Kristi does in fact win this season, she will be the first female to take the prize since season 1.

Kristi's closest competition according to the odds is singer Mario at 5-2. Tennis great Monica Seles and celebrity actress Shannon Elizabeth are tied at 6-1. Steve Guttenberg and Marissa Jaret Winokur are least favored to win.

We'll get a better idea of how the playing field looks with Kristi Yamaguchi and the rest of the cast of season six take the stage when Dancing with the Stars premiers on March 17.

Dancing with the Stars Contestant - Kristi Yamaguchi

Celebrity Photos and News - Dancing with the Stars

Kristi Yamaguchi

Kristi Yamaguchi is not only a strong contestant on the upcoming lastest season of Dancing with the Stars. She is also a wife and mother to two young girls.

Yamaguchi is married to Bret Hedican who plays hockey with the Carolina Hurricanes. They met at the 1992 winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Kristi won a gold medal in figure skating and Hedican was a member of the U.S. ice hockey team. They later married in 2000.

Kristi is mom to daughters Keara Kiyomi, age 4, and Emma Yoshiko, age 2. Her involvement in the competition this season will require the support and sacrifice of the whole family.

She will have to stay in Los Angelas while the show is airing. Her husband travels with the Hurricanes, so they will have to make special arrangements for where the girls will stay. But Kristi has a great family and her whole family is reportedly ready to do what it takes to stand behind her in her effort to be the next Dancing with the Stars champion.

Her professional dance partner this season will be Mark Ballas. He as already come to Raleigh, NC and they have begun practicing two hours a day. The finer techniques of dance are much different than those of figure skating so Yamaguchi will have to work hard to adjust if she wishes to be a successful Dancing with the Stars contestent.
